WEBSITE problems: Apologies to Ecsite-uk Members and others for the website not being available for most of 3rd and 4th of December. This was caused by an administrative error at the third-party hosting service used by our contractor. As a result, the link between our web address and the web server was broken. Procedures have been changed to prevent a recurrence.

Developments in the Sector 1: ReDiscover invites applications in Round 3, and Round 4

ReDiscover is a joint venture between the Millennium Commission, the Wellcome Trust and the Wolfson Foundation to support science education and engagement with the public. ReDiscover will bring new life to science by offering grants to UK science centres and museums to renew, replace, refresh or redevelop exhibition space.

The Fund has a total of £33 million available which is being awarded over four funding rounds. In the first round, nine awards totalling £3.8 million were made. Decisions on the second round will be made early in 2004.

Round 3: Deadline for applications 1 March 2004; announcement of awards August 2004
Round 4: Deadline for applications 1 October 2004; announcement of awards March 2005

New Information for Rounds 3 and 4

Please note that the ReDiscover funds, which form up to 75 % of the total project cost, should be spent by December 2005. As such, we would expect applications to Round 3 would be for larger more complex projects, similar to those funded in Rounds 1 and 2. Round 4 however, will be for short duration projects only.

In addition to applications covering the full spectrum of science, including technology and engineering, we would like to encourage applications that have a biomedical focus.

The application form for Round 3 will be available on the web by the end of December 2003.

Developments in the Sector 2: Venues sought for a touring exhibition from CAT

Ourplan-it.com is both a real-life and web-based temporary exhibition which helps us look at our environment in a new way. It has been designed to link any Museum or Science Centre to their city's sustainable development programme and to solutions-driven green organisations in the local area. Aimed primarily at 5 to 14 year olds and their families, the unique exhibition aims to help participants take a new look at what we mean by our 'environment' using a range of interactive techniques. There's a lot more going on than you first think - in fact, it all begins with you!

Your body is your first environment. It is a very dynamic place - there's always something going on, with atoms and cells which are constantly flowing and changing. The exhibition then goes on to explore the home, city and global environments, and the different 'metabolisms' which occur at each level. Finally the 'Inspiration Stations' offer a virtual tour of the Centre for Alternative Technology's renewable energy, environmental building and organic growing displays.
