News from the Ecsite-uk office: Get noticed worldwide on i-uk.com
The i-UK website www.i-uk.com
[archived page - link removed] has been developed by the Foreign Office as 'an essential guide to the UK'.
Ecsite-uk will be providing a short feature for the site every couple of months,
highlighting the UK's science and discovery centres.
If you've got news to share - let us know. Try to summarise the event, milestone
or happening in about 50-100 words and send it with a web link to Melanie Quin
at the Ecsite-uk office. We'll pick what seems to be the best by the deadline
and compile the feature.
In addition, we're supplying links for all the Ecsite-uk centres, to be used on
i-UK.
Developments in the sector: Opportunities for science centre and museum staff to support innovation in science teaching
Advance notice of diary date: Information and Networking Day 3 March 2003 in central London.
In advance of setting up a national network of science learning centres in 2004, the Department for Education and Skills and the Wellcome Trust are offering funding to develop and pilot new and exciting continuous professional development (CPD) courses for science teachers and other science support staff in schools.
We are looking for innovative and creative ideas which will enhance science teaching, from skilled and experienced training providers working alone or in partnership with each other. Whether you deliver CPD training in science or fields such as the arts and humanities, PSHE and Citizenship, IT and new media, we would like to hear from you.
We expect to develop up to 25 innovative courses across all phases and scientific disciplines, focusing on traditionally hard to reach groups, investigative skills at all Key Stages, discursive skills for secondary teachers and science in society.
An Information and Networking Day on 3 March in central London will facilitate
new partnerships and explore and stimulate creative ideas.
If you are interested in this initiative or attending on 3 March please contact
us by Friday 14 February.
Registration forms will be available from www.wellcome.ac.uk/creativescience from 7 February onwards. Funding application forms and guidance will also be available on the website shortly.
Resources: Colin Johnson, Ecsite-uk Chair, offers this month's 'Think Bubble'
'Start with the Child' is a recent publication from Resource, the Council for Museums, Libraries and Archives. It's a detailed account of some careful research into the needs and motivations of children, from pre-school to Key Stage 4.
Who should read it? Almost anyone concerned with the outputs and impact of a science centre. Whether you're in education or marketing, exhibition design or operations, there's food for thought and action here.
It's a 1.6 Mb PDF which you may find at www.resource.gov.uk/documents/re179rep.pdf [archived - link removed]
News from the regions: Change at top at Techniquest
The Council of Techniquest, the UK's first purpose-built science discovery centre, is planning for the future. It is looking for a Chief Executive Officer (designate) to lead the organisation - based in Cardiff - when the present Director, Colin Johnson, retires in mid-2004.
You will need a passion for science education, and excellent strategic, team leadership, communications and interpersonal skills. You will have a 'nose' for what the market wants and have experience of effective fundraising and marketing campaigns.
If you can balance the demands of mission and margin, help Techniquest develop and expand (and increase our revenue), we would like to hear from you. The salary will be c. 50,000 pounds a year.
Techniquest is a Company Limited by Guarantee, registered as an Educational Charity. It is part-funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.
