DEVELOPMENTS IN THE SECTOR
Challenge for young scientists
NESTA is now accepting applications for Crucible, a unique opportunity for scientists and engineers to take part in residential conferences where they can think about science in entirely new ways, while developing networking, management and communication skills.
Crucible is a year-long programme, with 30 scientists and engineers selected to take part each year. The awardees participate in three residential weekends, called LABs, each based around a discrete theme. In 2005, these will be science in society, globalisation and creativity.
Crucible is designed to offer you new ideas and experiences; you should the kind of person who can embrace new and challenging thinking. You should also be able to show evidence of interests beyond your research. This might include public engagement with science activities, or involvement with a professional society or special interest group.
Crucible is open for application until 26 January 2005 (5pm).

How is science changing us? Think back to a world without antibiotics, the contraceptive pill, vaccinations or even aspirin. Developments in biology and medical science have brought us new drugs and technologies that have changed our lives, expectations and the way we view our bodies and health. So what does the future have in store? Capture your vision in a photograph for a chance to win.
"A competition like this is excellent. Many of us assume that science is so advanced we cannot understand it. We have to because it affects our everyday lives."
Right Hon Estelle Morris MP
"All these kids have special education needs. Most are school refusers so there's lots of problems trying to engage them... When it was announced they'd won a prize it was wonderful. They are absolutely, unbelievably, chuffed."
Ian McDonald, EOTAS Network, Redcar. School's 2nd prize winner, 2003
Act now: closing date is 14 January 2005.

DIARY DATES
'Big Science' specialist seminar
DANA CENTRE, South Kensington
2 February 2005, 10.30am-4pm
This Specialist Seminar, funded by PPARC and convened by Ecsite-uk, offers Senior Managers the opportunity to find out what resources - including funding - are on offer to science centres from PPARC (Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council), ESA (European Space Agency), and CERN (the European Laboratory for Particle Physics).
It is also to explore ways of working together to turn public interest in the Big Sciences into increased visitor numbers and enhanced learning programmes.
'Big Science' stretches from life sciences to particle physics! On 2 February, the new PPARC funding scheme for science centres will be launched, inviting projects from astronomy/space (96% of the Universe is Missing!) and exploring the Solar System, to the search for extraterrestrial life.
Free to Ecsite members. £50 registration fee for non-members
