ASDC's statement on funding changes affecting Jodrell Bank Observatory

The Association for Science and Discovery Centres (ASDC) recognises that UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) have had to make difficult decisions in response to increasing financial pressures. However, we are concerned by the decision to withdraw funding for the e-MERLIN radio telescope network at Jodrell Bank Observatory.

While the funding that supports Jodrell Bank's public engagement and visitor experience is not part of these changes, its research and public engagement offer are intrinsically linked. Jodrell Bank is a rare and powerful example of a place where people can experience world-leading science where it happens, creating meaningful connections between research, curiosity and public understanding.

UKRI's own strategy recognises the importance of inspiring young people through research and innovation, broadening participation in STEM, strengthening science literacy and building public trust through museums, festivals and other engagement programmes. These ambitions are more important than ever. They depend not only on excellent science communication, but on a thriving research ecosystem that gives people authentic opportunities to engage with discovery as it unfolds.

Across the UK, science centres, museums and discovery organisations work every day to translate research into experiences that inspire curiosity, support lifelong learning and help people understand the role of science in their lives. Places like Jodrell Bank demonstrate the unique value of opening the doors to world-leading research, enabling people to experience science where discoveries are being made and the future is being shaped.

As the Government looks to harness science and technology to drive economic growth, inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, and build public confidence in emerging technologies, we must continue to recognise that investment in research and investment in public engagement are mutually reinforcing.

Jodrell Bank is not only an internationally recognised research facility; it's one of the UK's most important gateways to science. ASDC stands with colleagues across the research and science engagement communities in recognising its unique contribution to both scientific discovery and public inspiration, and we hope a sustainable path can be found that protects this national asset for future generations.
