In a powerful call to action for the future of science engagement in the UK, the Association for Science and Discovery Centres (ASDC) will host a roundtable event this September in the House of Commons, sponsored by Dr Ben Spencer MP. Titled Science Centres for Our Future: Supporting Engagement, Education and Diversity in STEM, this high-level gathering will unite voices from across the sector — science centre leaders, MPs, educators, academics, funders, and policymakers — to spotlight the vital role of science centres in the UK’s educational and innovation ecosystem.
As national hubs of curiosity, discovery, and learning, science centres reach millions of people every year, from school groups and families to communities traditionally underrepresented in STEM. This roundtable is a rare opportunity to showcase how these centres ignite lifelong interest in science and unlock pathways into STEM careers through hands-on learning and inclusive engagement.
The event will also confront the hard truths: infrastructure pressures and funding instability threaten the future of these vital institutions. Attendees will explore the policy solutions needed to secure long-term investment and innovation, ensuring science centres remain a driving force for STEM learning, community inclusion, and economic opportunity for decades to come.
ASDC Chief Executive, Shaaron Leverment, said:
“Science centres are where futures are shaped. They’re spaces of inspiration, wonder and connection, yet their future is far from secure. This roundtable is our moment to come together with MPs and decision-makers to build a shared vision for the future of STEM engagement. We are driven by the principle that access to science is a fundamental right, and that broadening participation from diverse regions and backgrounds, is good for UK society and for science itself.”
Look out for updates as we share highlights that emerge from the event and celebrate the UK’s science centres as engines of opportunity, diversity, and scientific progress.
